Join us for our final seminar of 2023 with Professor Robin Sengupta OBE (University of Newcastle), about his experiences establishing a neurosciences institute in India. Moderated by Professor Arjune Sen (Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Oxford).

This is a hybrid seminar, taking place both in person in the Seminar Room at Corpus Christi College and online via MS Teams. Followed by a drinks reception.

Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani…: Decolonisation and the Study of Commercial Indian Cinema(s)

Over the past decades, commercial Hindi cinema, often known as Bollywood, has not only gained international visibility but also garnered increasing academic interest. This talk will focus on identifying narrative, formal, technical and aesthetic choices made by a range of filmmakers over multiple decades, explore how these decisions represent a form of cinema that is deeply rooted in longstanding narrative and performance traditions, and propose the outlines of an anti-colonial, decolonising model for examining this cinema.
